I read a lot of reports and listen to a lot of information to write these posts. That means I subscribe to a lot of different newsletters and news/media outlets.
One of those is the Katie Couric Media newsletter. I get something new from that organization every morning. Many of them are political content so I ignore most of them, but the one from Tuesday, August 22 caught my attention. It was about the research that is being done that is shown to be linking Covid-19 to an array of brain disorders and what that means for us.
The article was written by Tess Bonn.
The findings were published in the journal Lancet Psychiatry. (This link takes you to the article in the Lancet Psychiatry Journal.)
The findings . . .
Overall, the findings show that "coronavirus patients have a higher risk of developing dementia, epilepsy, cognitive deficit (or brain fog), and other mental health disorders — and their risk can stay high as much as two years after their diagnosis," according to Bonn.
The researchers compared cognitive and common psychiatric disorders in patients with other respiratory infections and those with Covid-19. Their results were not good.
The journal stated, "Risks of the common psychiatric disorders returned to baseline after 1–2 months (mood disorders at 43 days, anxiety disorders at 58 days) and subsequently reached an equal overall incidence to the matched comparison group (mood disorders at 457 days, anxiety disorders at 417 days)."
That was the turn-around length for those "other respiratory infections."
For Covid-19, however, the findings showed, "By contrast, risks of cognitive deficit (known as brain fog), dementia, psychotic disorders, and epilepsy or seizures were still increased at the end of the 2-year follow-up period."
Not promising results. And quite alarming.
An earlier study from the same group found last year, "that a third of patients who had Covid-19 experienced mood disorders, strokes, or dementia about six months after their initial infection."
The article concludes that there are still a lot of questions to answer when it comes to Covid-19 and its effects on the brain. They are also studying to see if the effects affect children and adults the same way.
A personal story . . .
I can attest to the fact that I have continued brain fog as a result of having contracted Covid-19 in November of 2020. I had a more severe case of the disease and suffered from fever, nausea, aches, pains, shortness of breath, weakness, a weird breathing pattern, loss of smell, loss of taste, and general fatigue for about two and a half weeks. I didn't have to be hospitalized and for that I am grateful. But I have suffered many of the "long-Covid" effects including breathing issues and brain fog which has resulted in memory problems.

In a previous article, we had noted that "Mayo Clinic Professor of Medicine and Infectious Diseases Dr. Greg Poland said, ' that patients are also showing shrinkage of the brain of 2-4% which is leading to a drop in cognitive ability.'"
