- Candida Auris- a deadly, emerging threat
In recent years, healthcare professionals across the United States have been increasingly concerned about the rise of Candida auris, a multidrug-resistant fungus that poses a serious threat to public health. While Candida auris may not yet be a household name like other infectious diseases, its impact is significant and growing. What is Candida Auris? Candida auris is a species of yeast that can cause severe infections, particularly in hospitalized patients with weakened immune systems. First identified in Japan in 2009, this resilient fungus has since spread to various countries worldwide, including the United States. Why is Candida Auris a Concern? Candida auris is not your typical bacterial infection. This dangerous fungus can be spread by people who aren't even sick themselves. The CDC warns: "Someone who is colonized can still transmit C. auris onto surfaces or objects that they contact, which can then spread it to other patients." Those infected should stay away from vulnerable individuals and remain in separate rooms. Using products such as GoldShield Disinfectants and Antimicrobials can play a significant part in reducing the transmission of this fungus. Impact on Public Health in the US In the United States, Candida auris has been responsible for outbreaks in healthcare settings across several states. These outbreaks have resulted in severe illness, prolonged hospitalizations, and, in some cases, fatalities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has classified Candida auris as an urgent threat, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance and effective infection control measures. Prevention and Control Efforts Healthcare facilities play a crucial role in preventing the spread of Candida auris. Rigorous infection control practices, including proper hand hygiene, environmental cleaning, and adherence to recommended protocols for patient care, are essential for containing outbreaks. Additionally, early detection and prompt treatment of infections can help mitigate the impact of Candida auris. The Way Forward As Candida auris continues to pose challenges to healthcare systems in the United States, collaboration among healthcare professionals, public health authorities, and researchers is paramount. Enhanced surveillance efforts, innovative treatment strategies, and continued education on infection prevention and control are necessary to combat this emerging threat effectively. In conclusion, Candida auris represents a significant public health concern in the United States, highlighting the importance of proactive measures to prevent and manage its spread. By staying informed, implementing robust infection control practices, and working together, we can confront the challenges posed by Candida auris and safeguard the health and well-being of individuals nationwide. - Thriving through Holidays
Most of us love the holidays. We love the time spent with family and friends. The last thing we want to think about is getting sick! How to keep healthier this holiday season (and the rest of the year, too!) These days our health is one of our greatest assets. Even when we have nothing else, if we have our health, we can count ourselves fortunate. Although concerns about COVID-19 are mostly things we look back on with sad remembrance, the disease, and its variants are still in existence. We also have the "regular" flu and cold that are still out there, too. If there was only one thing that COVID-19 taught us, it is that good hygiene, mask-wearing, and staying home when sick keeps us much healthier. Another step that kept us healthier was frequent disinfection of high-contact surfaces. . Seven tips to keep healthier this season While there are many tips out there to keep you healthier, here are seven that are fairly common, no-nonsense ways to avoid influenza or other viral infections this holiday. Wash your hands thoroughly and frequently with soap and warm water throughout the day. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, and nose without first washing your hands. Use hand sanitizer (if soap and water aren’t available). Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Stay home if you believe you’re sick. Avoid contact with those who are sick. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work, or school, especially when someone is ill. Speaking of disinfecting, let's talk about and how it can help you keep your home, office, church, and other gathering places much safer. How can Goldshield give you a "cleaner" home? Goldshield86 is an all-purpose cleaner that is also an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered disinfectant. It can be used on most surfaces to clean, sanitize and disinfect. Because it kills 99.9% of bacteria and viruses, including influenza and SARS-CoV-2 (the COVID-19 virus), without harsh chemicals, noxious odors, harmful residues, or alarming safety warnings, you can feel safe using it in your home and other meeting places. It is also safe to use around pets and for disinfecting food preparation areas. Speaking of food preparation areas, that brings us to our second topic. How to keep your food prep areas healthier You may not know this, but there is a difference between cleaning and sanitizing. Just because something is "cleaned" or looks clean, does not mean it is sanitized or disinfected. While your kitchen counter looks clean, it may still be covered in germs and bacteria. Three processes are typically employed, starting with cleaning, followed by sanitizing, and concluding with disinfection. Cleaning is basically the process of removing debris and germs. It does not kill pathogens. It is the first step in preventing foodborne illness, though. Sanitizing is the process of reducing germs. Some areas that should be sanitized include: Cutting boards Countertops, prep-tables, work surfaces Food-contact equipment (can openers, slicers, grinders, mixers, etc.) Dishes and utensils Refrigeration units Beverage and ice equipment Goldshield is ideal for sanitizing these items and areas as it is food safe. It is considered a "no-rinse required" food contact surface sanitizer. It works fast and is effective! Disinfecting is the process of killing germs. Our specialty lies in eradicating germs, bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Goldshield products can help provide a safe, germ-free holiday season for lasting memories without the worry of illness. Five Steps to Effectively Clean and Sanitize or Disinfect Your home kitchen deserves the same treatment as a food prep area in a restaurant. Here are the steps to follow to keep your kitchen clean and free of pathogens. 1. PREPARE THE SURFACE Before you break out your cleaning supplies, brush off any loose debris or food particles from the surface (like a countertop) or item (like a plate), and dispose of them. You can use a paper towel or wet microfiber cloth to remove the debris and soak up any spills or wet messes. 2. CLEAN THE SURFACE Use a surface-safe cleaning solution to help dissolve any persistent food and residue, and dirt. Goldshield All Purpose Cleaner can be used in this pre-cleaning step. Unlike harsh conventional cleaners like bleach, Goldshield can be used on virtually every surface type, including wood, natural stone, stainless steel, concrete, glass, laminate, tile, and more. 3. RINSE THE SURFACE (IF NEEDED) If you used Goldshield to clean, you can SKIP the rinse! Rinse the surface with water to remove the residual cleaning solution. Rinsing is necessary because cleaning chemicals are not compatible with sanitizers and disinfectants. If they combine, the sanitizer won’t be able to do its job, or worse, mixing chemicals can have disastrous effects. 4. SANITIZE and DISINFECT THE SURFACE After thoroughly cleaning, se Goldshield 86 Disinfectant Spray or pre-moistened wipes on every surface. This simple no-rinse, food contact surface disinfecting product sets the standard for convenience and ease of use for all. 5. ALLOW THE SURFACE TO DRY Air-drying might seem trivial and time-consuming. However, this is an essential step of sanitizing and disinfecting. Typically, sanitizers require an average of 60 seconds of contact to kill germs on the surface, and disinfectants can take up to 10 minutes. Always read the product’s label before use to determine the appropriate drying time. Don't FORGET! For added protection up to 90 days, follow with Goldshield Antimicrobial Surface Agent. Finally... Have a happy and safe holiday season. Create a new tradition this year and give everyone the gift of Goldshield Surface Cleaning System!
- Miracle... in a bottle?
We hear about miracles all the time, don't we? For example, "It was a miracle I found a place to park on that busy street." Or "I can't believe I passed that test. It's a miracle." These aren't really miracles although they can be classified as "pleasant experiences!" The definition of a miracle is this according to Miriam Webster: " an extraordinary event manifesting divine intervention in human affairs." Given that definition, a parking space might be a miracle after all! The miracle I am here to talk about today, however, is the kind that comes along every once in a while, and makes you believe that there are great things that happen in the course of human affairs. I am talking about Pure&Clean products and today I want to share some of the many uses of these little "miracles" in a bottle. What is Hydrogel? According to the Strouse website, "Hydrogel is a 3D network of hydrophilic polymer material that quickly absorbs and retains a large amount of water (or other fluid). Incredibly versatile and environmentally sensitive, hydrogels are multi-functional across a variety of industries." Note: Strouse is a manufacturing company that specializes in adhesives, converting, printed tape, and more. While there are many uses for Hydrogel, we are going to focus on the hydrogel from Pure&Clean and its medical uses. What is Hydrogel used for? According to Strouse, the medical uses of Hydrogel are many. They had this to say, "The soft consistency, porosity, and high-water content of hydrogels are very similar to natural living body tissue, making them good candidates for many medical applications. Common uses include contact lenses, nerve guidance conduits, tissue bulking agents, and in nucleus replacement technology. "When used as a wound dressing, hydrogels promote healing, provide moisture, and offer pain relief with their cool, high-water content. Hydrogel saturated onto a gauze pad can prevent the dressing from sticking to the wound surface." Does it REALLY Work? There are also numerous case studies that show the effectiveness of Hydrogel in treating a variety of conditions. The Ultimate Guide to Tattoo Healing Are you considering adding a new form of self-expression, a tattoo perhaps? It could be a symbol of your personality, a reflection of a recent life-changing event, or just something that brings a smile or laughter to you and those around you. While you're in the process of selecting the perfect design, it's equally important to ensure you've chosen a tattoo artist who embodies professionalism, talent, and a genuine concern for the final outcome of your body art. Selecting the right artist is paramount to ensuring that your tattoo brings you lifelong satisfaction. You want an artist who can deliver the style, design, and overall experience you desire. Effective communication with your artist is key, as it allows them to grasp the significance of your specific design to you. Moreover, it's crucial to consider how the artist maintains their studio and whether they educate you on aftercare practices. Your tattoo experience should encompass both the creation of your unique design and the knowledge to care for it properly afterward. 1. **Hygiene and Safety**: Whether through an in-person visit or online research, ensure that the tattoo studio upholds strict hygiene and safety standards. A reputable studio should maintain a well-organized and clean environment, and its artists should use sterilized equipment and disposable needles. 2. **Licensing and Certification**: It's vital to confirm that the artist holds the necessary licenses and certifications to practice in your locality. Licensing prerequisites can differ from place to place, so be sure to acquaint yourself with your local regulations. 3. **Client Experiences**: Request references from the artist, particularly from clients who have received tattoos similar to what you're considering. Conversations with past clients can provide invaluable insights into the artist's skill level and professionalism. 4. **Aftercare**: Did you know that in many states, tattoo artists aren't obligated to offer aftercare instructions? Neglecting proper aftercare can result in scarring, swelling, infections, and a tattoo that you may not want to showcase anymore. While everyone is different, tattoos typically heal within two to three weeks; but it can take six months "for the skin below a tattoo to truly heal," as per Healthline. Of course, there are a range of different healing stages along the way and factors that will affect your particular situation. Some places on the body will heal faster while others will need more time. Finally, your personal habits — including how well you care for yourself and your tattoo, will determine the true length of time that your newest addition will take to fully heal. You may notice that your new body art (and the area around it) is red and tender and might be releasing some blood and excess ink. It might also be itchy, sore, and swollen. However, if your tattoo was done well and your body is reacting as it should, then you'll likely notice that these issues get a little better with each day that passes. The types of products offered after a tattoo is done can vary depending on the tattoo studio and the artist's practices. It's important to note that while these are common products and recommendations, each tattoo artist may have their own preferences and methods for aftercare. some common products and recommendations for tattoo aftercare typically include: 1. **Antibacterial Ointment or Tattoo Balm**: Many artists recommend applying a thin layer of antibacterial ointment or specialized tattoo balm to the fresh tattoo for the first few days. 2. **Non-Scented, Mild Soap**: Clients are often advised to clean the tattoo gently with a mild, fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water. 3. **Gauze or Plastic Wrap**: Some artists may cover the fresh tattoo with gauze or plastic wrap immediately after completion to protect it from outside contaminants. 4. **Disposable Towels or Paper Towels**: Disposable towels or paper towels are recommended for gently patting the tattoo dry after washing, as regular towels can harbor bacteria. 5. **Hypoallergenic Moisturizer**: After the initial healing phase (usually a few days in), it's important to keep the tattoo moisturized to prevent excessive dryness and itching. 6. **Sunscreen**: Once the tattoo is fully healed, protecting it from the sun's UV rays is essential to prevent fading and damage. The methods listed have been used by Millions of artists and receivers. In most cases everything turns out OK. I have heard many stories though of large areas of scar tissue causing swelling and itching. Fading colors, skin peeling, and even worse, major infections that can cause serious illness. What if... there was a BETTER way? Simple, Single Step Product that is all the RAVE? Introducing Tae'Tu. PROVEN SO SAFE, GENTLE, AND EFFECTIVE THE FDA REGISTERED IT SPECIFICALLY FOR TATTOO AFTERCARE. - RSV cases surge in children and infants
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), is a common cause of mild cold-like symptoms such as runny nose, cough and fever. Nearly all children in the United States normally catch an RSV infection by age 2. RSV is not a new thing, but cases have been causing hospitals to be at near capacity in some areas. According to Dr. Deanna Behrens, a pediatric critical care physician at Advocate Children's Hospital in suburban Chicago, "There is no one virus that's causing pediatric respiratory viruses this fall. Unfortunately, it's all of them." According to an article on NBCNews.com, "Babies and preschool-aged children are coming down with the flu, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), parainfluenza viruses, adenoviruses, rhinoviruses and enteroviruses in ways never before imagined, Behrens and other infectious diseases experts said." Babies and toddlers, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems are at the greatest risk should they develop RSV which can seriously affect breathing because of airway or lung infections. The NBCNews.com article further stated, "The flu is spreading at an especially high rate in Georgia, New York, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Washington, D.C., according to the latest flu report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Of the children hospitalized for flu, 80%, according to FluSurv-NET, are in Georgia. "While RSV is inundating many children's hospitals, the number of pediatric flu cases is also increasing. 'We've seen numbers doubling on a weekly basis,' said Dr. Sarah Combs, an emergency medicine physician at Children's National in Washington, D.C." Covid-19 is partly to blame. Why? Because these children may have built up immunities to some illnesses, but because of Covid-19 they were isolated from other children and didn't contract flus and colds like normal which helps to build up immunities. "What we lacked is a couple of years of little kids developing the immunity that's needed to keep these colds at bay," said Dr. Buddy Creech, a pediatric infectious disease expert at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. "We may be in for a rough six or seven weeks with influenza and RSV." ~NBCNews.com While typically hospitals see a lot of RSV and other flu conditions in November-December, cases are happening earlier this year which has led to the concerns. Symptoms of RSV The symptoms may vary, but for most normally healthy children the symptoms will be similar to other respiratory infections similar to the common cold. Cough Sneezing Runny nose Mild headache Sore throat Decreased appetite Fever But some children, older adults and those with compromised immune systems can get very sick from RSV. RSV can also lead to severe dehydration and dangerously high fever. According to the American Lung Association, RSV infection during the first 6 months (and especially the first 3 months) of life may lead to wheezing and asthma later in life. Call your pediatrician right away if you believe your child may have RSV. How is RSV Spread? RSV is very contagious. If you have the virus, you are usually contagious for 3 to 8 days. Some people may continue to spread RSV as long as 4 weeks, however. It spreads much like a common cold virus entering through the eyes, nose or mouth. It can spread through direct contact with saliva, mucous or nasal discharge. It can also be spread by unclean hands because it can live for 30 minutes or more on unwashed hands. It can also be spread through contaminated object or surfaces and it can survive on these for as long as 6 to 8 hours. Ways to Prevent the Spread of RSV Most of these are common yet simple ways to prevent the spread of RSV and many other illnesses. While they may be common-sense... common sense is sometimes hard to come by. Wash your hands often. The CDC recommends washing your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and warm water. Hum the song "Happy Birthday" twice as this is about 20 seconds. You should wash your hands frequently throughout the day especially when you are in contact with people who might be ill. If you are not sure, wash them anyway! But sometimes water is not available. In that case, LastGerm.com has a solution for you. - Bugs on the bus?
It is hard to believe that school is back in session. It's back too "early to bed and early to rise" for children and parents all over the world. While many of us parents were already getting up early, now we have the joy of getting the kiddos up and at 'em! Many parents have the benefit of transporting their children to school. This enables them to have some control of what their children are exposed to - at least until they get to school! As hundreds of thousands of children embark on school bus rides, it is crucial to consider the evident safety challenges. These concerns encompass various factors such as children crossing roads, congested traffic areas, and drivers possibly rushing due to time constraints. However, it is important to recognize that there are additional hurdles that must be taken into account to safeguard the well-being and health of our children in addition to their overall safety. While I am confident that your bus drivers take diligent care of their buses, the seemingly mundane yet crucial task of disinfecting seats can occasionally be overlooked or not performed with utmost precision. Millions of bacteria settle into the seats, handles, and windows on a bus. And our children are the target for any illness these bacteria may hold. This is where our efficient 2 Step process becomes significant. By utilizing our Goldshield 86 Disinfectant, we ensure immediate elimination of viruses and bacteria. Additionally, our Goldshield 75 Antimicrobial provides an extended period of up to 90 days of protection. Why is this important, you may ask? It's because continuous protection against harmful microorganisms significantly reduces the risk of infections, enhances hygiene standards, and ultimately safeguards the health and well-being of the passengers on your buses. It is essential to allow a disinfectant to "dwell" on a surface for a period of time to effectively eradicate bacteria. Often, individuals tend to apply a product and hastily wipe it off, which fails to instill confidence in the sanitization of the surface. Only by patiently waiting for the designated "dwell" time can the disinfectant eliminate the existing bacteria on the surface. However, once the product has dried, its efficacy diminishes as it has completed its intended task. This is where an antimicrobial is important. Check out this video to see how the protective layer of Goldshield will actually provide up to 90 days of protection on any surface! Kids are dirt and germ magnets It doesn't seem to matter how often you wash their hands and faces, kids are dirt and germ magnets. Because of that, I send a 1.7-ounce bottle of Goldshield hand sanitizer with my daughter when she goes to school. Recess can be hard on a kid! There are all sorts of things out on the playground and you don't always have a stick to poke at something. Sometimes you have to use your hands! That is why I am glad she uses this hand sanitizer. It lasts up to six hours and kills 99.99% of germs and bacteria on her hands. This hydrating formula also makes her hands soft, even if she is a rough and tumble girl! I like it because I know she is protected from a host of potentially harmful bacteria and germs. Goldshield Hydrating Hand Sanitizer kills 99.99% of germs and bacteria on your hands for up to 6 hours! Moisturizes and hydrates hands as it kills germs and bacteria. Alcohol and methanol free Instantly protect and noticeably soften your hands with this hydrating, no drip hand sanitizer that won’t dry, crack, burn or irritate your skin. Germs are all around us, from door handles to airplane trays, to your children’s toys. The most important thing you can do to protect yourself, your family, and your colleagues from getting sick is to keep your hands clean! Most kids don't care about being clean, but they do care about not feeling sick. This is an easy way to help them not get sick and still gives them the freedom to have a lot of fun getting dirty! You can feel safer as a parent or guardian knowing that when the kids are on the bus or at school, they are protected. Kids are always getting scrapes and cuts From wipeouts on their bikes or skateboards to scratches from their adventures in the woods, you name it, kids will find a way to get scraped up. I am in love with Pure&Clean's First Aid Spray and Hydrogel. Those are two of my favorite products for treating almost any cut or scrape that my family can get. Living in the country, our kids are always finding educational, yet sometimes dangerous activities to try. Getting scratched by mad roosters, cutting a leg on barbed wire fence, and even stepping on sharp objects are just a few of the summertime challenges we have had around here! Whenever she gets a cut or scrape or bug bite or sunburn, I pull out the hydrogel! I have never seen a product work so quickly at taking the sting out of a scrape or bite or scratch. Check out this link to see all of the great uses for Hydrogel! You may have questioned why I used the term back-to-school blues for the title of this post, but if you look at these products, they have blue labels. A great way to remember that not all back-to-school "blues" are sad! Questions? If you have further questions about how to keep your child protected from germs, bacteria or microbes at school and everywhere else, please contact an agent near you. - Navigating through Covid again? Lastgerm.com has got your back!
We are all dreading seeing this virus attack our world once again. As much as we may wish for the COVID pandemic to be over, there is a definite surge in cases with a new highly mutated variant called BA.2.86 a.k.a "Pirola", along with EG.5, a.k.a. “Eris". “Overall, I would expect cases and hospitalizations to increase – then decrease again before they rise in the late fall and early winter,” said Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, an infectious disease expert at UCSF. The summer surge in COVID-19 spread could extend into fall. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said hospitalizations rose yet again last week by another 19%. Deaths from the virus also saw a large jump: 21% in one week. The spread of the virus appears to be a problem just about everywhere. Only a few states – Alaska, New Hampshire and North Dakota – saw COVID-related hospital admissions drop last week. The other 47 states saw hospitalizations remain stable or increase. More than half of states – 26 to be exact – experienced a “substantial increase” in people being admitted with COVID-19, the CDC said. The biggest spike was in South Dakota, where hospitalizations increased by more than 127% in a single week, according to CDC tracking. A Covid outbreak tied to a City Council meeting in Nashville this month left more than a dozen people infected, including council members, city employees and at least one reporter. One of the people who tested positive for Covid — Freddie O’Connell, a City Council member who is in a Sept. 14 runoff election for mayor — said it was a stark reminder that the virus had once again taken hold in the community. “All year long, there have been many Covid spikes in my personal network, but it hasn’t felt like this, where all of a sudden we’re back to events that we used to hear about in 2020, where suddenly dozens of people in one fell swoop all get it,” Mr. O’Connell said in an interview from his home, where he had been marooned for a five-day quarantine. “I haven’t really had to think about the phrase ‘superspreader event’ in a long time.” Dr. John M. Coleman, a pulmonary and critical care doctor at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, said he expected Covid infections to continue to increase this fall and winter. “Moving forward, we have to learn to live cohesively with Covid,” Dr. Coleman said. “Covid is always going to be around.” So far, EG.5 “seems to be the same in terms of symptoms,” says Thomas Russo, M.D., a professor and the chief of infectious diseases at the University at Buffalo in New York. The same goes for “Pirola,” infectious disease expert Amesh A. Adalja, M.D., senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, previously told Prevention. Those can include, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): Fever or chills Cough Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing Fatigue Muscle or body aches Headache New loss of taste or smell Sore throat Congestion or runny nose Nausea or vomiting Diarrhea “Most people will have an upper respiratory tract infection, but some people will develop more serious disease, which will be a lower respiratory tract infection,” Dr. Russo says. “Some people develop non-respiratory tract symptoms, like diarrhea.” Conjunctivitis, a.k.a. pink eye, may also be a symptom, Dr. Schaffner says. Personally, having had COVID-19 in 2020, I can tell you that it was no picnic. I was very ill, not to the point of hospitalization yet I could not stay awake, smell, taste, eat or practically do any functional task with severe fatigue. My husband and son both were very ill as well. We were the lucky ones that made it through with limited issues. Now, experiencing many of the effects of long-haul COVID (one of the many names that post-COVID sufferers refer to the ongoing illness by), I can tell you that if you can avoid getting COVID in the first place—do whatever it takes to avoid it! But imagine if you could prevent getting COVID in the first place? Well, the fact is, you can through the products that LastGerm.com provides. Our proven 2-step process is 99.999% effective. Using our 2 Step process, you can eliminate 99.99% of bacteria, odors, and mold growth through a preventative coating system that goes hand in hand with your current cleaning regimen. Conventional disinfectants and antimicrobials kill microbes by poisoning them with toxic chemicals. Even those that achieve results with nontoxic ingredients are designed to both act and dissipate quickly to avoid harm to humans and animals. Unfortunately, as soon as the disinfectant evaporates, so do its antimicrobial capabilities. Unlike other antimicrobials, our system is odor-free, environmentally neutral, safe to use in child and pet areas, and can remain antimicrobial active for an extended period of time. Our 2-step process begins with completely killing any existing bacteria, viruses, and germs that are on a surface. GoldShield 86+ is a hospital-grade disinfectant that is EPA Registered and can be found on the N list as a product that successfully eliminates SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19). Viruses, bacteria, mold, and mildew have no chance of survival! This amazing product is "Step 1" in our system is an EPA-registered hospital disinfectant cleaner, mold killer, and odor eliminator. Its formula contains a unique form of stabilized chlorine dioxide that is very effective at killing bacteria, viruses, and mold yet non-corrosive to treated articles and gentle enough to handle without causing skin irritation. It is ready to use with no mixing required—just spray, wipe, or fog right from the bottle. The unique part of our process is our second product. GoldShield 75 is an anti-microbial surface protectant. EPA Registered and FDA Approved, this product can be used in any facility, including areas where children and pets play and in food prep areas. Once again, we use our sprayer to lay down a protectant on all porous and non-porous surfaces and this barrier provides a continual elimination of any microbe that lands on this surface! - Winterizing your Boat
I live in central Minnesota. Winterizing your boat, RV or cabin is an important part of seasonal maintenance. As the days grow shorter and colder, it's time to start thinking about winterizing your beloved vessel. Sure, it may seem like just another chore to add to your list, but trust me, it's worth every effort. Winterizing your boat can save you time, money, and even prevent potential damage. Let's talk about how to prepare your boat for the cold months ahead by winterizing it appropriately, and you'll be able to enjoy it all year long! Boat winterization is done by draining the gas tank, emptying the bilge of any water, and cleaning/inspecting your engine. You should also apply antifreeze to all of your hoses and oil lines, remove batteries from the boat and store them in a warm place, remove any drain plugs or caps on a trailer (if applicable) and lift the axle stands off the tires. The following tips provided in this article will help you to get a better overall understanding of boat winterization and everything it entails. Step 1: Protect Your Boat from the Cold Winter weather can be brutal, especially for boats that are left exposed. Freezing temperatures can cause moisture in your boat's engine and plumbing systems to expand, leading to cracks and costly repairs. By winterizing your boat, you'll flush out any leftover water, add antifreeze where necessary, and ensure your boat is protected from the harsh elements. Make sure to take care of the following tasks before storing your boat: ☑️Drain all fuel tanks ☑️Change the oil and filters ☑️Inspect the entire boat for any damage or repairs needed ☑️Use antifreeze in the water lines and engine cooling system Step 2: Remove items and cover The second step is to remove all useful items from the boat, including ropes and anchors, that you might need for the winter. These should be stored in a dry place so they don't get damaged. Next, cover the deck with a tarp or canvas sheet that can be stored away when not in use. For an extra layer of protection against damage from snow buildup over time, place plastic bags filled with sand around the deck area before placing a canvas sheet over everything. This will help prevent cracking due to weight shifts during freezing temperatures as well as keep moisture out of sensitive areas such as electronics wiring under decking surfaces (e.g., fiberglass Step 3: Prevent Mold and Mildew Imagine stepping into your boat after a long winter, expecting to embark on your next adventure, only to be greeted by a musty smell and unsightly mold. Yuck! The first step in protecting your boat's upholstery and interiors is to use an effective mildewcide. Mildewcides are chemicals that kill or inhibit the growth of mold and mildew, which can cause stains, odors and other problems. By properly winterizing your boat, you can prevent the growth of mold and mildew, keeping your boat fresh and ready to set sail in the spring. This involves cleaning and drying all surfaces, removing any food or organic matter, and using mold inhibitors, such as our Xanigo Mold & Mildew Preventor Step 3: Extend the Lifespan of Your Boat Boats are significant investments, and you want to ensure they last for years to come. Winterizing your boat is like putting it in a cozy cocoon to preserve its condition during the cold season. By taking the time to winterize, you can prevent corrosion, protect the exterior surfaces, and safeguard important components. A good water-repellent cover is an essential part of winterizing your boat. You'll want to make sure it's large enough to cover your boat, durable and well made, and that it's easy to store. Step 4: Save Money on Repairs As the saying goes, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Winterizing your boat not only protects it but also saves you from costly repairs down the line. By addressing any potential issues before they become major problems, you can avoid expensive fixes and keep your boat in top shape. Plus, when spring rolls around, you won't be left scrambling to fix winter-related damage. Winterizing your boat may not be the most exciting task out there, but it's undeniably crucial if you want to keep your vessel in excellent condition. By following these steps, you can protect your boat from the cold, prevent mold and mildew, extend its lifespan, save money on repairs, and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with proper care. So, grab your checklist, gather your supplies, and make winterizing your boat a priority. Your boat will thank you, and you'll be ready to set sail as soon as spring arrives! Happy boating! - How's the DOCK?
Ah, the joys of owning a dock! Whether you use it for fishing, boating, or simply as a peaceful spot to soak up the sun, your dock is undoubtedly an invaluable part of your waterfront paradise. But just like any other outdoor structure, it requires regular upkeep to ensure its longevity and safety. In this blog post, we'll share some practical maintenance tips to help you keep your dock in tip-top condition without breaking a sweat. So grab a refreshing drink, put on your favorite shades, and let's dive into the world of dock maintenance! Maintaining your dock doesn't have to be a daunting task. By following these simple yet effective maintenance tips, you can ensure that your dock remains a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable space for years to come. 1. Evaluate and Clean Regularly: Just like your car or your home, regular inspections and cleaning are key to maintaining your dock's overall health. Take a stroll along the dock and keep an eye out for any loose boards, protruding nails, or signs of wear and tear. Repair or replace any damaged components promptly, ensuring your dock remains sturdy and safe. Additionally, clearing away debris like leaves, algae, and seagrass will help prevent slippery surfaces and ensure proper drainage. 2. Seal and Stain for Protection: To shield your dock from the harsh elements, consider applying a high-quality sealant and stain. These products not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also provide a protective layer against moisture, UV rays, and rot. Select a sealant and stain specifically designed for marine environments and follow the manufacturer's instructions for application. 3. Mind the Water Level: Water levels can fluctuate due to tides, storms, or changing seasons. To prevent unnecessary stress on your dock's structure, you should adjust its height accordingly. Keep an eye on the water level and make necessary adjustments to ensure your dock maintains a safe distance from the water surface. 4. Secure Your Dock Accessories: Boat cleats, ladders, and other dock accessories can easily become loose or damaged over time. Regularly inspect and tighten any loose bolts, screws, or fittings. If you notice any signs of corrosion, consider replacing the hardware to maintain the integrity and safety of your dock. 5. Pest Control: Uninvited guests, such as barnacles, mussels, or termites, can wreak havoc on your dock's foundation. Inspect your dock regularly for signs of pest infestation and take preventive measures. Applying a marine-grade anti-fouling paint can deter marine growth, while termite treatments can help protect against wood-boring pests. Why is dock maintenance so important? Safety: A properly maintained dock and deck is safer for you and your family. This can result in a lower insurance premium, as well as less downtime for maintenance or replacement. Visual aesthetics: A clean dock and deck will look better for you and your neighbors, which increases the value of your property as well as making it more attractive to potential buyers. Decreased maintenance costs: Regular cleaning will prevent buildup of dirt, mold and mildew that can cause structural damage over time. You'll also be able to spot problem areas before they become costly repairs instead of waiting until they're too big to ignore. In addition, keeping up with routine cleaning will allow you to identify problem areas before they become major problems later on down the line; this means less wasted cash on emergency repairs plus fewer headaches when something goes wrong unexpectedly! A well-maintained dock or deck will last a long time and look nice. Regular maintenance can help to extend its life, as well as prevent potential hazards to you and others who use it regularly. Maintenance is important for safety reasons, but it also helps to make your home more enjoyable when you are using your dock or deck often.
